My first experience lighting a show for babies, as Filskit Theatre’s new show Kaleidoscope is designed for an audience aged 6 to 18 months. Following our visit to The Sussex Baby Lab at The University of Sussex to learn about how sight and colour perception develops in the very young, we ran with that idea and the inspiration of Kaleidoscopes to create the performance.

Using Pixel Mapping techniques provided by our ETC EOS Nomad lighting console, we used real images photographed from images seen through Kaleidoscope toys from our childhood to create many of the patterns in the show.

Around twenty babies a time watch the show, sitting in the arms or laps of their caring adults, and the show takes place in front and around them, with textures and lights for the babies to explore. With new audience members for the show always being born, the chances are good for Kaleidoscope to tour year after year!
